Bow ties, the moment has finally arrived. After months and months spent in excruciating anticipation. After many a sleepless nights tossing and turning. After hours agonizing in fear of the unknown. At last, freedom was on the horizon, light shone brightly at the end of the tunnel. The Golden Globes, Emmys, Grammys, BAFTAs and SAG Awards have been annihilated in an ugly awards show massacre! The dust has settled and the trumpets have sounded. It is time.
Nose hairs plucked? Yes! Nether regions waxed? Done! Poison injected into armpits to paralyze sweat glands? Confirmed! All the hard work, the dedication, the campaigning, the backstabbing, butt kissing, lies, deceit and manipulation has paid off… well, for some. On
fashion’s Hollywood’s biggest night, who will be rewarded? Whose dreams will finally come to fruition while looking impeccable? Yes, my bow ties, yes. It’s here. Which fashion stylists will remain hired and which will be fired? It’s the 87th Academy Awards Best Dressed Men! Let’s dive in 🙂
Whew! The 2015 Oscars came barreling in like a bat out hell and succumbed to a thundering conclusion. There was rain, waaay too long acceptance speeches (which I put on mute), tears, laughs and… Neil Patrick Harris in his… underwear?!? But, above it all there was FASHION!!! And that’s what it’s all about…. okay, okay. There were also these award thingies given out to some Hollywood elite types who could recite their lines rather convincingly…but, THAT’S BESIDE THE POINT!
Fashionably speaking, it was quite a night for the Oscars with menswear taking a surprisingly diverse and risky turn (well, in terms of men’s fashion anyway). In fact, I must admit, there was so much style that my eyeballs could barely handle all the “fashion” of it all. There was of course, the expected classic and standard black tuxedo look or the equally acceptable option of the midnight blue tuxedo in what has become the all-too-common alternative suit color of choice. Then there was the color grey, which was introduced as a new viable option for men’s evening wear and least we forget the white tuxedo, as it made quite the showing. Then there was some risk taking with boldly colored tuxedos and rather interesting neckwear (looking at you Mr. Travolta). All in all, the menswear for the Oscars this year was not exactly what I was expecting. Then again, I also wasn’t expecting Lady GaGa to completely ditch those red dish washing gloves and proceed to not only wow the audience with her amazing tribute performance to Ms. Andrews and the Sound of Music, but earn accolades from Ms. Mary Poppins herself! See what happens when you strip off all the hoopla and shenanigans? Your left with a beautiful, simple and touching musical tribute of one of the most legendary movies of all time, but I digress.
So who were the real winners of the night? Who needs a silly little thing called an Oscar statute when you have flawless fashion sense to fall back on? Trust, that fashion sense will take you a lot further in life… I think. Below, my best dressed men for the 2015 Oscars. Enjoy!
Oh and one more thing, be sure to look for my golden bow tie award, given to the gentleman who truly has risen above the fashion ashes! Click on photos for full size images!
Round 1: Bold Colored Tuxedos
Have you ever thought about wearing a tuxedo… in lilac…to the Oscars? Mr. Leto has and did! I have to say, I’m actually liking the result (I know). If you are a gentleman who really wants that cool, eccentric but sensitive rocker guy vibe? Look no further than Mr. Leto, who has managed to refine and polish this look into a sophisticated and somewhat classy ensemble (a custom-made Givenchy tuxedo and Fred Leighton brooch). And contrary to what you might think at first glance, Mr. Leto spent a lot of time and money getting his hair, skin and beard in tip-top shape for this awards show… and it shows! Who else can get away with a lilac tuxedo… at the Oscars?!? Oh, you’re right…Prince. PS, hate the shoes.
Yes, I am aware of the fact that Mr. Oyelowo is wearing a burgundy tuxedo (Dolce & Gabbana). Don’t freak out, but he is one of my best dressed of the night. Okay, calm down! Here’s why: the tailoring on this suit is the best of the all gentlemen at this event. The fit of this tuxedo on Mr. Oyelowo is flawless. When you look this good in suit, who freakin’ cares that it’s burgundy… and if you are going to wear a suit in the red family, this is how you do it! Bravo Mr. Oyelowo!
Round 2: The Black Tuxedos
Although Mr. Levine didn’t exactly have a wonderful musical performance at the Oscars, his classic black Giorgio Armani tuxedo catapulted him into the stratosphere of Old Hollywood Glamour. Mr. Levine is timeless and perfectly dapper! Best Dressed of the night.
Mr. Pine and Mr. Legend (In Gucci) are both looking golden bow tie dapper. A+ gentlemen!
These gentlemen also made the cut for best dressed… in black tuxedos!
Mr. Chris Pratt in Tom Ford
Mr. Chris Evans (Gucci)
Mr. Chiwetel Ejiofor
Mr. Hutcherson in Ermenegildo Zegna
Round 3: The Midnight Blue Tuxedos
When you are 6’4″ and 200 + lbs. of solid muscle, things could get a bit tricky when it comes to the fit of your suit. But, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson doesn’t fall prey to the fashion faux pas! His gorgeous midnight blue tuxedo fits him like a glove and actually shows off his chiseled physique instead of the exact opposite. The Rock is cooking up some debonair style…smell what he’s cooking!
Mr. Teller has a lot lined up in his movie future. With key roles in some of the most anticipated blockbusters on the horizon, Mr. Teller is taking it to the next level not only with his acting chops, but with his fashion. Looking suave in Prada, Mr. Teller is hitting all the style key notes!
These gentlemen also made the cut for best dressed… in midnight blue!
Mr. Common in Prada
Mr. Eddie Redmayne
Mr. Ansel Elgort in Prada
Mr. Idris Elba
Round 4: The White Tuxedo Jacket
Mr. Brody pulls off a white tuxedo jacket effortlessly and that’s no easy feat!
Mr. Cumberbatch continues his fashion streak with this pristine white tuxedo jacket!
Mr. Murphy is looking crisp!
Unfortunately for funny man Mr. Hart, this white is NOT right!
Round 5: The Grey Tuxedo
Michael Strahan has come a very long way since his days playing in the NFL. This charcoal grey tuxedo proved to be a fine choice for this ex-footballer
And finally, last but not least, Mr. NPH himself. His hosting duties may be up for debate, but Mr. Harris receives top honors for his fashion choices during the show and on the red carpet. Best dressed of the night (for both Mr. Harris and Mr. Burtka in Brunello Cucinelli)!
