Congratulations to Mr. Chris Pine, who has been awarded the Fashion Icon honor by The Gentlemen’s Style Academy…and he has absolutely no clue! . Not bad for a relative newbie in the Hollywood game!

Fashion Icon: Chris Pine (Series Conclusion)

A lovely shade of… brown?!?

Have you ever thought about viewing the colors of your suits as children?  I’m guessing that’s a no.  But if you did, you would recognize that the suit colors black, navy, and gray (or charcoal) are in deed your “chosen ones”. Yep, that’s right! You’re playing favorites…with your own kids no less!  These colors, along with their varying associated shades tend to be favored as the go to hues of men’s business attire.  This is not a random occurrence.  For years, business etiquette professionals have been brain washing drilling into our heads longstanding rules that address proper suit color choices. For instance, black suits (or midnight blue suits) are for formal occasions, a navy suit is appropriate for business related activity because it’s so professional looking, and charcoal is for…well…let’s just say when you run out of navy suits to wear (cause, you know, you can’t wear navy all day every day) then it is perfectly acceptable to wear a charcoal suit to the office or business meeting.

And then there’s the brown suit…it gets absolutely no respect or even a seat a the dinner table! It’s casted off and banished to the back of the closet like an unwanted step-child. Yes, gentlemen…the brown suit is the black sheep in the family. Etiquette professionals will whine, “it’s too casual looking” or “brown is not appropriate for formal occasions or job interviews”.  Basically, if an event is hella important or is seen as  formal or somewhat classy, the brown suit simply is NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Further contributing to the brown suits dire state is the fact that it is not the easiest color to wear and it can get a bit tricky matching it to the different skin tones (although this can be done with the right shade).

But times they are-a-changin’ and the revenge of the brown suit is in full swing! Whether it’s a lavish and decadent chocolate velvet dinner jacket or a beautiful tweed with specs of golden hues, gentlemen are beginning to favor the “other child”. This brings us to Mr. Pine, who is proving to cynical gentlemen everywhere that (A) brown suits are in deed a stylish option and (B) it is possible to achieve a high level of dapperness while wearing one!  Mr. Pine pulls off a brown suit effortlessly…and that’s saying something! Do you know just how hard it is to pull off a brown suit?  Obviously Mr. Pine doesn’t and he’s here to show us fellas just how great a brown suit can be.  So remember, don’t let the brown suit be your least favorite child. I mean, isn’t it time to a least let him sit at the dinner table this go round? See Mr. Pine in a brown suit and other color suits below!

The Double-Breasted Man! Style Icon: Chris Pine

Next up in my Fashion Icon 2014 series is none other than Mr. Pine.  Look for a series of posts featuring the ‘Star Trek’ actor that highlight his dapper choices!

For a hot second there the thought of a double-breasted jacket as a viable option for men’s suits conjured  up all kinds of stressful and scary images for many stylish (and not so stylish) gentlemen (especially the young ones). Pictures of  tacky, shapeless, ill-fitted sack suits worn by your grandpa and other old fuddy-duddies haunted us fellas for years on end!  And then came a fashion breakthrough…in the form of Mr. Pine!

Mr. Pine first splashed upon our eyeballs when he appeared in moves like, “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” and “Just My Luck” with the infamous Ms. Lohan before she…well, you know…  However, it wasn’t until Mr. Pine landed the much coveted role of Captain Kirk (a character first made famous by the legendary Mr. Shatner) that his career skyrocketed into epic proportions and made him a household name.  In other words, Mr. Pine was everywhere! In our newspapers, magazine articles, television screens, movies and internet homepages.  And judging from his fashion choices, Mr. Pine is well aware of the fact that many of our eyeballs have been forced to gaze upon him as a result.  It’s obvious that Mr. Pine took heed of this notion!

While the ‘Unstoppable’ actor may be relatively new when it comes to Tinseltown, I will have you know that he wasted no time raising the bar when it comes to men’s fashion.  And what is that bar you ask? Well, I’ll tell you…the DOUBLE-BREASTED suit that’s what!  Mr. Pine reached way back to yester year, pulled out the aforementioned suit, dusted it off, tailored it and POOF!  A modern, fresh, young and sophisticated take on the classic wardrobe staple was thrust back out into the spotlight in the blink of an eye…or two. Mr. Pine has grabbed on to the double-breasted suit train and won’t let go! And I don’t blame him. The double-breasted suit does him good, it’s his BFF for life!

However, Mr. Pine’s stylish and dapper choices don’t end with just one style of clothing, he’s bringing the A game to every nook and cranny of men’s fashion and that is why he is my Fashion Icon.  Don’t believe me?  Judge for yourself, but you’re just going to agree with me anyway!

Flawless: Although the navy tux seems to be the color of choice at the moment (and with good reason), Mr. Pine is the epitome of what  Beyoncé would call “flawless” in a classic  black double-breasted tuxedo. I’m certain he “woke up like this”. In Ermenegildo Zegna (image: John Shearer/Invision/AP)
